Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month is an opportunity to learn

When we say Hispanic Heritage Month, it’s often assumed that every Latino person speaks Spanish, when many may only speak their indigenous language. It also excludes people from Brazil, since Brazilians typically speak Portuguese. The term “Hispanic” overwhelmingly identifies people as being of Hispanic descent and doesn’t allow much space for acknowledging Indigenous and Black communities. Because of this generalization, the erasure of Black and Latinx Indigenous peoples is all too common. Of course, many issues go deeper than terminology. In celebrating this month, many fail to acknowledge the true history of Hispanics/Latinos in the United States.


All we have seen are the achievements of the likes of Cesar Chavez, Dolores Customer Phone Number List Huerta, Sandra Cisneros and Roberto Clemente. But rarely do we hear about historical events like the Zoot riots or the lynchings of Mexican Americans in the Southwest. About the diversity and culture of the people this month represents. This is an opportunity to take action to support your community.

While the month’s name and celebration have been questioned, there is no doubting the resilience of the Hispanic/Latino community. So let’s discuss some meaningful ways to celebrate and be allies beyond this month, and provide some resources to help you get started. Meaningful Ways to Celebrate Hispanic/Latino Month Hispanic/Latino heritage deserves to be celebrated, and there are many ways to celebrate Hispanic/Latino culture and stories.
